This is not a recommended practice in uncovered fields for the following reasons:
- Silage tarp is not permeable like ground cover. Therefore restricting the flow of air and water. This leads to soil borne plant disease.
- Related to reason number one, water will pool up and create foliar borne plant disease.
One could use silage tarp plastic in a covered space with drip irrigation. Holes are not necessary, as one could butt up a piece of plastic to each side of the plant and fasten it down with anchoring pins.
